Why Test Prolactin?

• Irregular periods
• Low libido
• Galactorrhea (milk production not related to childbirth)
• Infertility

Normal Levels

• Women: < 25 ng/mL
• Men: < 20 ng/mL

High Prolactin Causes

• Pituitary tumors (prolactinoma)
• Medications (antipsychotics, antidepressants)
• Hypothyroidism
• Stress

Low Levels?

• Rarely significant clinically

Treatment

• Dopamine agonists (e.g., cabergoline)
• Address underlying cause
